Costa Rica Nature is considered to be one of the best and the most biologically diverse in the world. For me, someone who loves nature, I have always wanted to visit Costa Rica. While planning for my trip to Costa Rica, I was not sure what to expect. I have seen many shows on “The Discovery Channel” and “Animal Planet” about Costa Rica. Jeff Corwin writes about Costa Rica in one of his books. In one story, he writes about being bitten by a Coral Snake that almost took his life. Of course anyone who knows me, knows how much I love snakes, so after reading that last story, I was excited to go there and look for snakes including the infamous Fer De Lance Snake. I wanted to go and experience for myself what the programs I saw on television and the books I have read said about Costa Rica. That day finally arrived.
Since I did not know the country very well and I want to see all the nature I could. I decided to take several tours that was provided through the hotel. I talked to Carla who works for the Hotel Presidente and puts together tours for the guests who stay there. Carla was very cute, super friendly, and very helpful. She helped me pick out the right tours for me. She suggested that I take the “Highlights Tour” and the “Arenal Volcano Tour”. The “Highlights Tour” was a tour that took me to 4 different areas of Costa Rica. The whole tour was an excellent experience. The tour bus came early to the hotel in which I was already waiting. When I got on the Tour Bus, I met two teenagers from Germany. They were brother and sister named Lars age 15 and Sol age 17. They both spoke English, Espanol, Deutsch, I think French and maybe a few other languages. It is amazing how the culture is in Germany. Here are these young kids who were by themselves in a strange and foreign land and they had no problem with it. I was in Costa Rica with a friend and I was very nervous. Anyway, I had a lot of fun talking to them about their culture in Germany and they both took some nice photos. I also met a nice young lady named Jesse. She had just finished Medical School at University of Massachusetts. I forget exactly what she was doing in Costa Rica, but I know she was going to be there for a few months. Jesse was extremely attractive, had a terrific personality and surprising enough, she talked to me pretty much the entire tour. I really enjoyed conversing with her. It was funny, before the tour, I was so used to trying to speak Spanish that when I first started talking to her, I spoke Spanish to her. She must of thought I was nuts. Normally I would of ask a girl like this out, but I did not want to ruin the great time that we both had. Ok, now back to the tour. We first drove the Poas Volcano National Park. On the way there, my keen eye for wildlife caught a cool and rare sight of a Two Toed Sloth. Now I did not actually see the sloth at first, all I saw was a bunch of tourist standing by a tree taking photos. When I got to the scene, I saw the sloth. I had the impression that sloths are extremely slow and lethargic, but this animal was quite lively. It was moving around pretty good looking for leaves to eat. We all took a bunch of photos and then left. We finally arrived at Poas Volcano National Park. Poas Volcano is 2574 meters (approx 8884 feet I think, I hate math) above sea level. We all had to walk about a half of mile uphill to the crater. The high altitude + me being out of shape = me being out of breath and wanting to take a quick break, but I was trying to impress a cute girl, so I played it off pretty good; I think. The crater of Poas Volcano is an awesome sight. It is very large crater measuring about 1 mile across and 1000 feet deep. I think I read somewhere that it is one of the largest volcano craters in the world. I will have to get back to you on that. The sight of the crater was very fun until the strong odor of the sulfur hits you; It nearly knocked me over!
